Swine Influenza and You

Are there human infections with swine flu in the U.S.?
In late March and early April 2009, cases of human infection with swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses were first reported in Southern California and near San Antonio, Texas. Other U.S. states have reported cases of swine flu infection in humans and cases have been reported internationally as well. An updated case count of confirmed swine flu infections in the United States is kept athttp://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/investigation.htm CDC and local and state health agencies are working together to investigate this situation.

Is this swine flu virus contagious?
CDC has determined that this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human. However, at this time, it not known how easily the virus spreads between people.

What are the signs and symptoms of swine flu in people?
The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

How does swine flu spread?
Spread of this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

How can someone with the flu infect someone else?
Infected people may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or more days after becoming sick. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.

What should I do to keep from getting the flu?
First and most important: wash your hands. Try to stay in good general health. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. Try not touch surfaces that may be contaminated with the flu virus. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Are there medicines to treat swine flu?
Yes. CDC recommends the use of oseltamivir or zanamivir for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with these swine influenza viruses. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that fight against the flu by keeping flu viruses from reproducing in your body. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications. For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within 2 days of symptoms).

How long can an infected person spread swine flu to others?
People with swine influenza virus infection should be considered potentially contagious as long as they are symptomatic and possible for up to 7 days following illness onset. Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods.

What surfaces are most likely to be sources of contamination?
Germs can be spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth. Droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person move through the air. Germs can be spread when a person touches respiratory droplets from another person on a surface like a desk and then touches their own eyes, mouth or nose before washing their hands.

How long can viruses live outside the body?
We know that some viruses and bacteria can live 2 hours or longer on surfaces like cafeteria tables, doorknobs, and desks. Frequent handwashing will help you reduce the chance of getting contamination from these common surfaces.

What can I do to protect myself from getting sick?
There is no vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu. There are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza. Take these everyday steps to protect your health:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you get sick with influenza, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

What is the best way to keep from spreading the virus through coughing or sneezing?

If you are sick, limit your contact with other people as much as possible. Do not go to work or school if ill. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. Put your used tissue in the waste basket. Cover your cough or sneeze if you do not have a tissue. Then, clean your hands, and do so every time you cough or sneeze.

What is the best technique for washing my hands to avoid getting the flu?
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. Wash with soap and water. or clean with alcohol-based hand cleaner. we recommend that when you wash your hands -- with soap and warm water -- that you wash for 15 to 20 seconds. When soap and water are not available, alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers may be used. You can find them in most supermarkets and drugstores. If using gel, rub your hands until the gel is dry. The gel doesn't need water to work; the alcohol in it kills the germs on your hands.

What should I do if I get sick?
If you live in areas where swine influenza cases have been identified and become ill with influenza-like symptoms, including fever, body aches, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea, you may want to contact their health care provider, particularly if you are worried about your symptoms. Your health care provider will determine whether influenza testing or treatment is needed.

If you are sick, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people as much as possible to keep from spreading your illness to others.

If you become ill and experience any of the following warning signs, seek emergency medical care.

In children emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

  • Fast breathing or trouble breathing
  • Bluish skin color
  • Not drinking enough fluids
  • Not waking up or not interacting
  • Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
  • Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
  • Fever with a rash
In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
  • Sudden dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Severe or persistent vomiting

How serious is swine flu infection?
Like seasonal flu, swine flu in humans can vary in severity from mild to severe. Between 2005 until January 2009, 12 human cases of swine flu were detected in the U.S. with no deaths occurring. However, swine flu infection can be serious. In September 1988, a previously healthy 32-year-old pregnant woman in Wisconsin was hospitalized for pneumonia after being infected with swine flu and died 8 days later. A swine flu outbreak in Fort Dix, New Jersey occurred in 1976 that caused more than 200 cases with serious illness in several people and one death.

Can I get swine influenza from eating or preparing pork?
No. Swine influenza viruses are not spread by food. You cannot get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork products is safe.

Key Facts about Swine Influenza (Swine Flu)

Swine Flu

What is Swine Influenza?
Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. Swine flu viruses cause high levels of illness and low death rates in pigs. Swine influenza viruses may circulate among swine throughout the year, but most outbreaks occur during the late fall and winter months similar to outbreaks in humans. The classical swine flu virus (an influenza type A H1N1 virus) was first isolated from a pig in 1930.

How many swine flu viruses are there?
Like all influenza viruses, swine flu viruses change constantly. Pigs can be infected by avian influenza and human influenza viruses as well as swine influenza viruses. When influenza viruses from different species infect pigs, the viruses can reassort (i.e. swap genes) and new viruses that are a mix of swine, human and/or avian influenza viruses can emerge. Over the years, different variations of swine flu viruses have emerged. At this time, there are four main influenza type A virus subtypes that have been isolated in pigs: H1N1, H1N2, H3N2, and H3N1. However, most of the recently isolated influenza viruses from pigs have been H1N1 viruses.

Swine Flu in Humans

Can humans catch swine flu?
Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans. However, sporadic human infections with swine flu have occurred. Most commonly, these cases occur in persons with direct exposure to pigs (e.g. children near pigs at a fair or workers in the swine industry). In addition, there have been documented cases of one person spreading swine flu to others. For example, an outbreak of apparent swine flu infection in pigs in Wisconsin in 1988 resulted in multiple human infections, and, although no community outbreak resulted, there was antibody evidence of virus transmission from the patient to health care workers who had close contact with the patient.

How common is swine flu infection in humans?
In the past, CDC received reports of approximately one human swine influenza virus infection every one to two years in the U.S., but from December 2005 through February 2009, 12 cases of human infection with swine influenza have been reported.

What are the symptoms of swine flu in humans?
The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular humanseasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Can people catch swine flu from eating pork?
No. Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. You can not get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products is safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F kills the swine flu virus as it does other bacteria and viruses.

How does swine flu spread?
Influenza viruses can be directly transmitted from pigs to people and from people to pigs. Human infection with flu viruses from pigs are most likely to occur when people are in close proximity to infected pigs, such as in pig barns and livestock exhibits housing pigs at fairs. Human-to-human transmission of swine flu can also occur. This is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people, which is mainly person-to-person transmission through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the influenza virus. People may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

What do we know about human-to-human spread of swine flu?
In September 1988, a previously healthy 32-year-old pregnant woman was hospitalized for pneumonia and died 8 days later. A swine H1N1 flu virus was detected. Four days before getting sick, the patient visited a county fair swine exhibition where there was widespread influenza-like illness among the swine.

In follow-up studies, 76% of swine exhibitors tested had antibody evidence of swine flu infection but no serious illnesses were detected among this group. Additional studies suggest that one to three health care personnel who had contact with the patient developed mild influenza-like illnesses with antibody evidence of swine flu infection.

How can human infections with swine influenza be diagnosed?
To diagnose swine influenza A infection, a respiratory specimen would generally need to be collected within the first 4 to 5 days of illness (when an infected person is most likely to be shedding virus). However, some persons, especially children, may shed virus for 10 days or longer. Identification as a swine flu influenza A virus requires sending the specimen to CDC for laboratory testing.

What medications are available to treat swine flu infections in humans?
There are four different antiviral drugs that are licensed for use in the US for the treatment of influenza: amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivir. While most swine influenza viruses have been susceptible to all four drugs, the most recent swine influenza viruses isolated from humans are resistant to amantadine and rimantadine. At this time, CDC recommends the use of oseltamivir or zanamivir for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses.

What other examples of swine flu outbreaks are there?
Probably the most well known is an outbreak of swine flu among soldiers in Fort Dix, New Jersey in 1976. The virus caused disease with x-ray evidence of pneumonia in at least 4 soldiers and 1 death; all of these patients had previously been healthy. The virus was transmitted to close contacts in a basic training environment, with limited transmission outside the basic training group. The virus is thought to have circulated for a month and disappeared. The source of the virus, the exact time of its introduction into Fort Dix, and factors limiting its spread and duration are unknown. The Fort Dix outbreak may have been caused by introduction of an animal virus into a stressed human population in close contact in crowded facilities during the winter. The swine influenza A virus collected from a Fort Dix soldier was named A/New Jersey/76 (Hsw1N1).

Is the H1N1 swine flu virus the same as human H1N1 viruses?
No. The H1N1 swine flu viruses are antigenically very different from human H1N1 viruses and, therefore, vaccines for human seasonal flu would not provide protection from H1N1 swine flu viruses.

Swine Flu in Pigs

How does swine flu spread among pigs?
Swine flu viruses are thought to be spread mostly through close contact among pigs and possibly from contaminated objects moving between infected and uninfected pigs. Herds with continuous swine flu infections and herds that are vaccinated against swine flu may have sporadic disease, or may show only mild or no symptoms of infection.

What are signs of swine flu in pigs?
Signs of swine flu in pigs can include sudden onset of fever, depression, coughing (barking), discharge from the nose or eyes, sneezing, breathing difficulties, eye redness or inflammation, and going off feed.

How common is swine flu among pigs?
H1N1 and H3N2 swine flu viruses are endemic among pig populations in the United States and something that the industry deals with routinely. Outbreaks among pigs normally occur in colder weather months (late fall and winter) and sometimes with the introduction of new pigs into susceptible herds. Studies have shown that the swine flu H1N1 is common throughout pig populations worldwide, with 25 percent of animals showing antibody evidence of infection. In the U.S. studies have shown that 30 percent of the pig population has antibody evidence of having had H1N1 infection. More specifically, 51 percent of pigs in the north-central U.S. have been shown to have antibody evidence of infection with swine H1N1. Human infections with swine flu H1N1 viruses are rare. There is currently no way to differentiate antibody produced in response to flu vaccination in pigs from antibody made in response to pig infections with swine H1N1 influenza.

While H1N1 swine viruses have been known to circulate among pig populations since at least 1930, H3N2 influenza viruses did not begin circulating among US pigs until 1998. The H3N2 viruses initially were introduced into the pig population from humans. The current swine flu H3N2 viruses are closely related to human H3N2 viruses.

Is there a vaccine for swine flu?
Vaccines are available to be given to pigs to prevent swine influenza. There is no vaccine to protect humans from swine flu. The seasonal influenza vaccine will likely help provide partial protection against swine H3N2, but not swine H1N1 viruses.

So You Wanna be a Pilot? Yes, I wanna be… Thanks for awaken me...

Hi, I’m Chang Yee Chun.

Briefly Description of Aviation Field History:

First of all, I would like to highlight the history of aviation. Drawn back to pre-historic era, the Aulus Gellius, Archytas, the Ancient Greek philosopher, mathematician, astronomer, statesman, and strategist ever made a bird-shaped model propelled by a jet of what was probably stem, said to have successful flown 200 meters. His invention product known as ‘the Pigeon’. Besides, the Lord Kelvin, William Thomson, Irish-born British mathematical physicist and engineer, ever stated that “Heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible.” However, after a long term of invention and discovery for the dream of flying in the skies, the Wright Brothers, Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright, the pioneer of aviation field inventor invented the glider of which the manned airplane was successful introduced on 17 December 1903.

Air Crash Incidents:

An aviation accident had roughly defined in the Annex 13. The Annex 13 stated that occurrence associated with the operation of an aircraft which takes place between the time any person boards the aircraft with the intention of flight and all such persons have disembarked, in which a person is fatally or seriously injured, the aircraft sustains damage or structural failure and/or the aircraft is missing or is completely inaccessible. Besides, an aviation incident can also defined that there as an occurrence other than an accident, associated with the operation of an aircraft, which affects or could affect the safety of operations.

In this modern era, the invention and introduction of modern airplane allowed convenient for people to travel around the world. Nevertheless, the incidents of air crashes and aircraft accidents are unavoidable. These all probably caused by human error and some weather conditions. A survey had been conducted by Boeing Company stated that 55% of aircraft accidents were due to flight crew error, 17% is because of airplane (mechanical error), 15% due to weather, 7% classified into miscellaneous and others reasons, 5% due to air traffic control erroneous and 3% maintenance mistakes. This survey was based on aircraft accidents happened on between 1996 through 2005. While Trantolo & Trantolo LLC concluded that some common causes of aircraft accidents include pilot error, inclement weather, engine failure, mid-air collision, negligent maintenance, instrument failure, icing, air traffic controller error, improper loading of cargo, defective onboard equipment and fuel tank explosions.

For instance, the notable aircraft accident happened in our country was Malaysia Airlines Flight 653 from Penang International Airport to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport and it changed it route to Singapore International Airport (Paya Lebar) and crashed at Tanjung Kubang, Johor. This tragedy was happened in Dec 4, 1977 due to hijacking. It was speculated that the Japanese Red Army was responsible for the hijacking and and subsequent murder of the pilots due to the hijackers were spoken in Japanese, according to the cockpit voice recorder found on the site of this aircraft accident. There were totally one hundred fatalities involved in this aircraft accident, included 93 passengers and 7 crewmembers and survivor. A novel written by Dzul Karnain Ithnin called Tregedi Empat Disember (The Tragedy of December Four) was obviously referred to the real disaster.

On the other hand, another notable aircraft accident happened due to in-flight structural failure result of metal fatigue and explosive decompression. It was China Airlines Flight 611 scheduled departed on Taipei Taoyuan International Airport headed to Hong Kong International Airport and crashed near Penghu Islands in the Taiwan Strait on May 25, 2002. This tragedy was the result of metal fatigue due to inadequate maintenance after a previous incident on February 7, 1980 in Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport. The aircraft was then ferried back to Taiwan on the same day de-pressurized, and a temporary repair done the day after. A team from Boeing conducted a permanent repair on 23 May until 26 May 1980 but the permanent repair of the tail strike not carried out in accordance with the Boeing SRM. Consequently, after repeated cycles of depressurization and pressurization during flight, the weakened hull gradually started to crack and finally broke open in mid-flight on 25 May 2002, exactly 22 years after the faulty repair was made upon the damaged tail. An explosive decompression of the aircraft occurred once the crack opened up, causing the complete disintegration of the aircraft in mid-air.

As a conclusion, the aircraft maintenance should be carrying out accordingly to the highlighted guideline. Such lots of air safety topics for instance, lighting, ice and snow, engine failure, metal fatigue, delamination, stalling, fire, bird strike, ground damage, volcanic ash, human factors, airport design, infection, emergency aircraft evacuations and runway safety.

Based on my own view, I felt sorry and condolence to those fatalities all involved in the aircraft accidents since the beginning of invention of aircraft. I do not felt that aircraft accidents were heart-broken, but it given me an impression of highly alert towards air safety must always putting in first priority and shouldn’t negligent.

My Determination on Piloting:

Firstly, I would like to tell me experience with first flight when I was only a few months infant with Malaysia Airlines at that time. That flight was flying from Sandakan to Alor Star, via Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur. Logically, I couldn’t remember my first flight experiences. =P However, I only discovered that flying with aircraft when I was only four years old, where the age for kiddies started to discover new stuff and learn. Then, I started to discover regarding airplane and friendly miss cabin crew. There was a sillier affair during my trip back to West Malaysia, and I was waiting at Subang Airport Terminal Three when I was about eight or nine years old, I greet a pilot at the time I waiting for the next flight to Alor Star. I rushed in front of him and asked, “How do u make the airplane fly?””How do you keep airplane fly in the sky without dropping on the ground or sea?” ”How do you control the flight? Is it a complicated job?” “How do you…”, he then looked at me and smiled brightly answered my question, “You will know that after you have steep into secondary school.”

As time pass by, after I step into form four and successfully enrolled into science stream. I could remember that there was a physics tutor at my school physics lab. My teacher taught us about Bernoulli’s Principle, it was the most wonderful tutoring at that time. She did taught and explained clearly regarding the principle and it’s application, inclusive whether how is an airplane could fly and control. It was my time to discovered that airplane flying was actually can clearly explain in the Bernoulli's Principle.

Yeap, I do wanna to be a pilot, as since I was in standard two or three. Hence, I tried my best to write a better post to grab a chance to be short-listed under this program. Why not? Just post and grab a chance to be participating in Air Asia’s cadet pilot this year. I'm a man of never give up, so I'll try my best all the time. If you do not short-listed my post, I'll to write a post as much as possible before the due date. Cheer!

“So You Wanna be a pilot?” ”Yes, I do.”

Hello, my name is Tony Chang~

Yes, I do want to be a pilot since I was a child and it was never changed and replace by other type of ambition… =) Although my dad ever said that "发你的春秋大梦!"or"Stop dreaming on Spring and Autumn!"meaning to say: "Do not build a castle in the air!" :\

Why do I want to be a pilot? I don't know but I have a great feeling that I should to be participate in the aviation field or flying with airplane as well...

While my first flight story started at:
Since I was a baby boy (just a few months old), I have already taken my first flight from Sandakan to Alor Star via Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur. It was a fascinating journey although I do now know the entire route. Yeah, a baby do not know what's happening to him/her, he/she can only know want to drink milk and sleep. The reason of my first ride was because my granddad passed away due to stomach cancer.

Almost every year my family and I will go back to my hometown by taking airplane and motorcar during festival seasons, some critical condition of illness of relatives (esp. my grand mum), funeral and wedding ceremonies of relative and during school holidays. Frankly speaking, I only discovered that taking flight matter after I was going kindergarten and teacher taught me about airplane matter (in fact, she only teach what is an airplane). After I know this, then I keep asking mum on the next ‘balik kampung’ season. I remembered that one of the questions that I asked my mum when we waited at the departure hall, “妈妈,是谁在飞机里面驾飞机的呢?” or “Mama, whose operate the airplane?” She replied, “是那个穿白衣, 头顶顶着黑色帽子的叔叔咯。” or “It was operated by the uncle whose worn white shirt with black cap above.” Then I amazed that they were those ‘drive’ and control the airplane fly above the sky and headed to the place of arrival.

Apart from that, there is a sillier thing is, one time, I greet an uncle pilot during the time I waited at the departure hall at Subang Airport Terminal Three when I was about standard two or three, I rushed in front and looked up at him, I asked, “How do u make the airplane fly?””How do you keep airplane fly in the sky without dropping on the ground or sea?””How do you control the flight? Is it a complicated job?” “How do you…”, he looked at me and smiled brightly answered my question, “You will know that after you have steep into secondary school.”

As time pass by, since I have step into secondary school and form four and five. As the uncle pilot told me, I really could understand how the airplane flies on the sky through Bernoulli’s Principle and the airplane was really can fly by those aerofoil shaped wings on the left and right hand side. In fact, the flight was flies steadily by the flow of air over the top has to travel faster and creates a region of low pressure. On the other hand, while the flow of air below the aerofoil with lower air speed than above, resulting in a region of higher pressure and thus can fly steadily about 25000 until 30000 feet above the sea level. Nevertheless, it still have to take count how is the weather condition, thus it can fly steadily.

I believe that the operation of flight was not that simple. While it must be complicated and sophisticated, since there are so many things have to learn, such that: weather or meteorology, geography (esp. geographic coordinates), calculating distance and time of flight through nautical mile and latitudes of from one location to another location, rate of acceleration and retardation during flight time and so on. I also understand that all these must be calculate accurately and take high attention to avoid "bad things" happen and avoid flight delay. That is why I am here to post this and hoping to successful to grab a chance of get into this program of lovely AirAsia Bhd and start to learn whether “how is the airplane can fly safely above the sky?” and learn the complicated and sophisticated stuff of an airplane and also the cultural of AirAsia.

Frankly speaking, I am a slow learner, but I am willing to put more effort than others do to learn something and substitute into proper conditions and problems and thus solve the solution.

Apart from that, I could understand and proficiency in Malay (of coz, it is our only national language/Bahasa Kebangsaan), English (INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE, why not?), Mandarin (all in writing, typing, speaking and pronunciation. I got a grade B4 for Mandarin in SPM ’08), Cantonese and Hakka (I am Hakkas, why not?).

Anyway, I understand that my posting was not as well as other did previously, but I have already tried my best in posting this article. Since then, I have tried to edit and typing this since midnight of Apr 7 till 2 o’clock and then continue on 1200 until 1400, totally about 4 hrs.
